Bill - That is the biggest complaint that I have about being a Special Education teacher is the paperwork, and the amount of time that it takes us to do it. All this is in addition to our regular teaching duties (planning, teaching, grading, etc.), which makes for some mighty long days and weekends to get all the stuff done.

Actually, once I am in the classroom in front of my students, I don't worry about anything but attempting to teach the students that I have...who typically don't want to be there and attempt to teach them whatever subject I am assigned to teach - right now it is English Language Arts with a focus on Literacy.

It is a different style of teaching, but I love it, I believe that I have more flexibility than regular ed teachers, what they do has already not worked for most of these kids, so I have to do it differently or else I will get the same results - no learning. I just give it my best and if it isn't good enough they will find someone to replace me, who will do it better.

But that is a different blog post.

Thank you for commenting, I hope to see you back here again, I am just starting this blog and hope that it is informative on my impressions of what Special Education Teachers do.

I had no idea of the amount and type of paperwork today's special ed teachers face. It seems to me that in addition to the time burden it places on you, it must also shape the purely educational decisions you make. Do you find that you don't do one or more things in the classroom for fear that you might not be able to justify them easily under cross examination in legal proceedings?
